You Got It Right

You were not too busy

to teach us right from wrong

you were soft when you had to be soft

strong when you had to be strong

and I could not have known it

back when I was a kid

but from  my perspective now

I think it's amazing what you did

between your work and your family

you kept everybody happy

and I do not take that lightly

and I tell everyone

I remember every summer

camping out beneath the trees

or fishing on a quiet lake

my brothers, you and me

now all us kids and grandkids

a debt of gratitude we owe

because from you we learned what matters

by the example that you showed
